Brooch

A lesson produced by Web Photo School

Jewelry photography is gaining popularity as many people are selling their products on internet auction sites. Proper lighting of jewelry pieces results in attractive photos that can help to increase sales.

This lesson shows a very simple lighting setup for getting good photos of jewelry.

Topics Covered:

  • Setting the main light
  • Adding a bounce fill

Equipment Used:

    Figure 1

We set the Basic Starlite Kit in place to the left of the camera, 45 degrees relative to the subject, and 9 inches away. To control the light spill onto the background, we turned the light toward the camera and off the fabric behind the brooch. We then turned the brooch toward the light to pick up or enhance the color.

    Figure 2

The resulting shot is good showing detail and some nice highlights. We can easily brighten some of the darker areas with a bounce reflector.

    Figure 3

We placed the white side of the 12" Soft Gold/White LiteDisc clipped to the Litedisc Holder directly under the camera lens. This will bounce some light into the metal surfaces of the brooch and reduce the overall contrast of the image.

A second 12" Black/Silver LiteDisc was added to the right of the subject to further reduce the contrast and add more separation between the subject and the background.

    Figure 4

There's a nice highlight to the legs and the color of the brooch is enhanced. The addition of the second LiteDisc adds a bright highlight all the way from the top to the bottom of the brooch, greatly enhances the color, and separates the subject from the background.
