Capturing the motion and the drama of dance can be a challenging but rewarding project. This lesson shows how we set up a lighting solution based on our Starlite continuous light system.

Topics Covered:
- Using side lighting
- Lighting from below for drama
- Adding grids for better light control
Equipment Used:
 Figure 1 |
This dance studio wall would serve as the background for our photo session.
A Medium Starlite Kit was placed on the left side of the set and a Small Starlite Kit was set to the right. Each light was directed to face where our dancer would leap. Both lights would stand about 2 feet from the wall allowing the wall to be lit by the light "spill" of the soft boxes. |
 Figure 2 |
A Large SilverDome soft box and Starlite were positioned low and in front of the dancer. A background stand (LiteStand 2200) was used to secure the soft box.
The inner baffle and diffusion face were removed so that we would achieve a high-contrast light output. |
 Figure 3 |
The high-contrast light and low light position provided a dramatic feel to our shot. |
 Figure 4 |
Grids were added to the two side lights to reduce the light spilling onto the background. |
 Figure 5 |
The darker background makes our shot look more dramatic. |
