Controlling the color and contrast of any image can be a snap. The MultiDome from Photoflex offers three soft boxes in one. By installing the included colored interior panels you can change the contrast as well as the color of the light output of the box. This lesson will take you through some simple examples and show how the MultiDome can effect your images in a positive light.

    Figure 1

The MultiDome soft box is a versatile light modifier perfect for a variety of studio and outdoor lighting scenarios. In addition to working as a basic soft box producing soft diffused light, it also includes four double-sided gold and silver panels that can be added to the interior of the box. These panels alter your light for enhanced imagery. Gold warms the scene while silver creates great contrast. The MultiDome is designed for use with strobes or cool lights.

For this lesson, we chose to do a product shot for a catalog. This first image is the set up of a medium MultiDome without the interior panels installed and both the interior baffle and front face installed. We have also placed a LitePanel: translucent 39 x 72-inch over the subject, to give the soft box a double diffusion effect. [figure 1]

Here are the results, very soft highlights and clean even light. [figure 2]

To add some warmth and help set a mood, we will add the gold interior panels to warm the output of the light. The baffle and front diffusion face have been removed. [figure 3]

    Figure 4

Here’s our result. We see the color effect we want but the contrast is much too great and our shadows have blocked up. [figure 4]

To finish up the shot and fix the contrast issue, we replaced the baffle and front face on the MultiDome. We also added the circle mask to help control the shape of the highlights on the black Plexiglas. [figure 5]

    Figure 5

To finish up the shot and fix the contrast issue, we replaced the baffle and front face on the MultiDome. We also added the circle mask to help control the shape of the highlights on the black Plexiglas. Here is the MultiDome in the final configuration and placement. We have also added a 42-inch MultiDisc Kit using the white disc to bounce some fill into our final shot. [figure 5]

Here is our final result. [figure 6] We see the warm soft feeling we wanted from the light and the contrast and shadows are under control thanks to the proper configuration of diffusion and fill.
