Full Length Fashion 2

A lesson produced by Web Photo School

This lesson shows a very effective method for shooting a full-length fashion shot in the studio using strobe lights and large soft boxes. This shot was lit with a 5-foot OctoDome3 and strobe as the main light, a large LiteDome and strobe as the fill light, and a focusable continuous light as a background light.

    Figure 1

We set up a Photoflex StarFlash 1000 Mercury 5' OctoDome Kit on the right of the set. The center of the box was set at about 5 feet high and angled a bit down.

    Figure 2

The texture of the dress is brought out by the side lighting of the light source.

Notice how the model is lit head-to-toe. A smaller soft box would not be able to provide this much coverage.

Notice also that the shadow cast is very soft because of the broad light source provided by the 5-foot OctoDome3.

    Figure 3

We placed a large LiteDome with the StarFlash 300ws strobe on the left of the set as a fill light to brighten up the darker side of the model.

    Figure 4

The large LiteDome has filled in the darker side nicely. The light ratio between the main and fill light is pleasing and there is still texture showing in the dress.

    Figure 5

Grids were added to the main light to direct light only in the direction of our model. The scattering of light is reduced and light is prevented from falling on the background.

    Figure 6

Grids were also attached to the fill light.

    Figure 7

Notice that our model is still lit very nicely, yet the background is darker than the previous shot taken without grids on the soft boxes.

    Figure 8

To add some color to our shot, we placed a focusable spot light with a colored gel on the right of the set. This light was directed on the background.

    Figure 9

The spot light and gel added an attractive element to the final shot.
