Here we will illustrate a very common lighting approach used by professional fashion photographers called "clamshell" lighting. "Clamshell" lighting is popular because it typically renders a flattering 1:1 lighting ratio.
For this lesson, we scheduled a photo-shoot with a local model to create a classic "clamshell" head and shoulders shot.

Topics Covered:
- Creating a 1:1 lighting ratio
- Filling in the shadows with the HalfDome2
- Using a HalfDome2 to create a hair light
Equipment Used:
 Figure 1 |
In this setup shot, we placed a Photoflex Starlite Medium Digital Kit with a 1000 watt lamp on a Photoflex Boom and BoomStand. We then placed the Medium Starlite over the subject as our key light. |
 Figure 2 |
Here we see the results that the Medium Starlite kit produces. |
 Figure 3 |
We placed a Small Photoflex Halfdome2 mounted to a Photoflex Starlite and a 500 watt lamp. We then placed the Small HalfDome2 on a Photoflex 2200 LiteStand and set it in front of our model as a fill to open up the shadows. |
 Figure 4 |
Here we see the results of the HalfDome 2 used as our fill light. |
 Figure 5 |
In this set up, we added a Photoflex Medium HalfDome2 with a 500 watt lamp, on another Boom and Boom Stand, as a hair light. |
 Figure 6 |
In our final image, we see the effects of the HalfDome2 as a hair light. Our model is now separated from the background and has very nice highlights in her hair. |
