Ultimate Guide to Off-Camera Canon Slave Flashes

Slave flashes are simply self-contained flash units which respond to external triggers of some kind. They're frequently used in studio situations. For example, you might have a multiple-flash setup - one flash to illuminate the subject and another unit or two to illuminate the background separately. Many slave flashes are triggered by light optical slaves. They have small sensors built in or attached that detect the light pulse from another flash unit and then trigger immediately themselves....

They are especially useful when you suddenly encounter a picture-taking opportunity and don't have time to decide exactly which Creative Zone mode you want to use. Instead, you can spin the Mode Dial to the appropriate Basic Zone mode and fire...

Compact Flash Memory cards - is yours a fake?

I have been wanting to write this article for some time now ever since I received a really bad fake SandDisk Ultra II Compact Flash card a few years back. After doing some research online, I found a few others that were getting the same crap cards from their online purchases. Real and fake SanDisk Ultra II CF cards The first fake CF card I came across was pretty obvious, visually. I received it with a used camera I bought, so I really couldn't complain.

Know How To Override Autofocus

As good as the Canon autofocus system is, there are times when it just isn't doing the job for you. Many times this has to do with how you would like to compose a scene and where the actual point of focus should be. This can be especially true when you are using the camera on a tripod, where you can't pre-focus and then recompose before shooting as discussed earlier . To take care of this problem, you will need to manually focus the lens. I am only going to cover the kit lens that came with my...

The DJI Inspire 1 - The Photographer's Aerial Platform?

There is absolutely an aerial revolution taking place right now as everyone from farmers to photographers are trying to see what benefits they can get when putting a camera platform in the air. Up until recently, you really had two choices, a small system that could carry a GoPro, or a large system for carrying a small DSLR. The big downside of the GoPro is having to correct for the bad fisheye effect of the lens, and the big downside of a larger copter is the 7,000 10,000 starting price.

Best External Battery Packs for Canon Camera Flashes

A Canon camera flash is an essential tool for photographers, providing illumination to capture stunning images in low-light conditions. It's crucial to use the right batteries to ensure your flash unit works efficiently and reliably. When selecting the best batteries, consider these factors: capacity, recharge time, and lifespan.

AF assist light

It's very hard for cameras based on passive autofocus mechanisms this includes all EOS cameras except the manual-focus EF-M to focus when it's dark, since they rely on contrast between light and dark areas. For this reason many EOS cameras have a built-in light that automatically illuminates in low light situations to help the autofocus system to work. On many of these cameras this is a relatively discreet patterned red light from a bright red LED light emitting diode , but on some it's an...

The Best Low-Light Cameras: Master Night Photography with the Best Gear

If you're ready to challenge your photography skills, shooting low-light and nighttime images is a great way to do it. Night and low-light images not only challenge your exposure skills, but they also open a new world of creative challenge, enjoyment, and the potential for stunning images. Some events and stock photography also involve low-light scenes and nighttime shooting, so having a good understanding of how to get good results without excessive digital noise is important.

Customizing Exposure and Focus Lock Options

By default, pressing your shutter button halfway establishes and locks focus when you work in autofocus mode. When you shoot in the advanced autoexposure modes, you also can lock in the autoexposure settings the camera selected by pressing and holding the AE autoexposure Lock button, labeled in Figure 11-3. You can customize these locking behaviors via a Custom Functions item on Setup Menu 2. Here's how 1. Set the Mode dial to an advanced exposure setting. As with all Custom Functions, you can...

Exposure compensation

Another way to modify the standard exposure on the 5D Mark II is by using exposure compensation, which enables you to purposely and continuously modify the standard exposure by a specific amount up to 2 f-stops in 1 3-stop or 1 2-stop increments via C.Fn I-01. A common use is to override the camera's suggested ideal exposure in scenes that have large areas of white or black. In these types of scenes, the camera's onboard meter averages light or dark scenes to 18 gray to render large expanses of...

Av aperture priority mode flash

Av mode lets you set the depth of field by specifying the lens aperture. The camera then chooses a shutter speed ranging from 30 seconds to the camera's X-sync speed, in order to expose the background correctly. If that means the shutter speed is some really low value so that you need to use a tripod to avoid camera-shake blur, so be it. In dark conditions, therefore, Av mode works in slow sync mode. Flash duration flash output is determined by the flash metering system. Like Tv mode the camera...

Adobe RGB vs sRGB vs ProPhoto RGB

Mac versus PC, RAW versus JPEG, Coke versus Pepsi, all solid battles in their own right but Adobe RGB versus sRGB is still one that confuses more people than anything else. One of the problems is that there is big name experts on both sides of this argument arguring why their side is right and the other is totally off-base. What we will try to do is to show how both affect images so that you can choose the right one for your situation.

Expert Review: Best Auto Bellows for Canon Cameras

The Auto bellows, a high-performance accessory, forms the nucleus of Canon's close-up, macro, and copying systems. Used with lenses including a standard 50mm and other close-up accessories, it is capable of providing continuously variable magnifications within a fixed range. Also, when used with a double cable release, there is no need for manual aperture setting. Bellows length can be varied from 39mm to 175mm for magnifications ranging from 0.75 to 3.9x with a 50mm macro lens.

High-Speed Sync Flash Mastery: The Ultimate Guide

The best high-speed sync flash is a game-changer for professional and amateur photographers alike. High-speed sync (HSS) technology enables photographers to use flash at shutter speeds faster than the camera's native sync, overcoming the limitations of traditional flash systems. When considering the best HSS flash for your needs, there are several key features to look out for.

The Four Elements of Exposure

Exposure is a precise combination of four elements, all of which are related to light and all of which are interrelated. If one element changes, then the other elements must change proportionally. Each element depends on the others to create a successful exposure. Following is a summary of four elements of exposure that are discussed in detail in this chapter Light. The starting point of exposure is the amount of light that's available in the scene to make a picture. The range of creative...

Autofocus and selecting Autofocus modes

The speed and accuracy of focusing and the ease of manually selecting an AF point are as critical to camera performance as having a good onboard metering system. The 5D Mark Il's AF performance is excellent, and AF selection is customizable. Getting tack-sharp focus, of course, depends on three factors the resolving power of the lens (its ability to render fine details sharply), the resolution of the image sensor, and the resolution of the printer for printed images. Although the resolution of...

Canon 430EX II Speedlite Flash

The 430EX Mark II is the current mid-range flash from Canon. It does everything you expect from an accessory flash you get a very good range and it works in all camera modes with all shutter speeds your camera offers. Canon's ETTL(II) flash exposure protocol adjusts everything automatic flash strength and flash reflector zoom. One thing, however, does not work with a traditional speedlite lighting in video mode.

Canon Speedlite 320EX vs 430EX II

Camera Remote FeatureThe second innovation comes in form of a camera remote control mode, built into the flash. This features is activated with a button on the right side of the flash body, which I first thought was the wireless TTL sensor. However, that sensor is located on the front side of the flash body, the same sub-optimal solution as found on the 430EX (II).

Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash Review

The 580EX II is the latest generation flagship model speedlite from Canon. While aiming at the needs of professional photographers it's certainly compatible with any Canon DSLR, including the entry-level Rebel series bodies. This flash under review is the unofficial L series flash in the Canon speedlite range consisting of the 3 other models 270EX II, 320EX, 430EX II. It's the most powerful and advanced flash in their lineup and comes with the highest build quality.

Focusing in Live View

The problem with focusing in Live View is that the camera's autofocus sensors are located in the top of the camera, where the pentamirror is. In Live View mode, since the main mirror is flipped up, the autofocus sensors can't see out the lens. Therefore, to focus, you have to choose one of several options. If you switch your lens over to manual focus, you can manually focus the camera in Live View, just as you would if you were looking through the viewfinder. However, the LCD screen is not...

Nikon SB-25 Strobist Review

For some reason the SB-25 from Nikon is much less known as a strobist flash than its precursor SB-24 or the later SB-28 model. Compared to the SB-24, the Nikon SB-25 has 2 clear advantages first, its manual mode goes down to 1 64, which means it has 2 stops more than its precursor with a minimum power setting of 1 16. Second, the SB-25 has a built in wide angle diffuser that allows 20mm coverage. SB-24 is missing this feature, its coverage starts at 24mm. The later SB-28 has only a 0.

Working with Memory Cards

Canon T90 Memory Card

Instead of recording images on film, digital cameras store pictures on memory cards. Some people, in fact, refer to memory cards as digital film, but I hate that term because film and memory cards actually have little in common. Film must be developed before you can view your pictures, a process that involves time and some not-so-nice chemicals. Film can be damaged when exposed to some airport security scanners memory cards are immune to those devices. The cost per picture is also much higher...

Using your flash's guide number

If you have ever shopped for a flash or read a review, you may have noticed a section of the spec called the guide number or GN. While this value is a measurement of power that the flash has and allows you to compare flash models, is this number useful to you at all In this article we dig into the guide number and see how we can use this number help us dial in our flash and camera settings using some math instead of just guessing and retrying until you get what you want.

Nikon 7900 Review

The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is super compact, very light weight, and has a rugged metal body to withstand lots of wear and tear. Quite simply, the CoolPix 7900 produces pictures that are so good they compare favorably with those from most digital SLRs. The design is derived from earlier models, a product line starting with popular Coolpix 4300 launched in 2002.

Yongnuo YN-468 E-TTL Review

This is the 2nd part of the Yongnuo YN-468 accessory flash review. Part one the strobist review of the YN-468 looked at the manual mode and its usability for wireless flash photography with radio triggers. Here now in part 2 we have a close look at the Yongnuo's behavior on a digital TTL camera. For these tests a Canon 40D with 24-105mm lens was used.

Speedlite 600EX-RT and ST-E3-RT - Canon's New Radio Flash Duo this is HUGE news!

Together with other news Canon today announced 2 3 new speedlite products, the 600EX speedlite and the ST-E3 speedlite transmitter . These products are truly revolutionary as they come with built-in radio control for wireless flash, making the existing optical wireless technology (with its limitations) obsolete. The third new product is the Speedlite 600-EX without radio control technology see the 600EX page for more information.

In-depth Review of Canon Speedlite 320EX Flash and Video Light a 430EX II alternative

The new Canon 320EX (not '320EX II') is the first of a new breed of speedlites providing illumination for photo and video shooting. And given the advantages this has it won't be the last of its kind. In this in-depth review the Canon AF speedlite 320 EX gets the opportunity to prove its worth as a photo flash in a series of tests, e.g. for the real output guide number, and the flash recycling time.

Yongnuo Guide Numbers and Flash Comparison

TTL FlashesYongnuo currently offers 3 different TTL flashes, all part of the 460 line which means they share the casing and overall design. Among them, the YN465 is the simplest and cheapest (and my favorite), while the YN468 is the most advanced with an LCD screen on the back, but it's also the only one that's available for Canon only. Spec Yongnuo YN 465 Yongnuo YN 467 Yongnuo YN 468 Official GN(35mm*) 33 33 33 Measured GN**35mm 27 20 20 Measured GN at18mm (wide-panel) 15 13.5 13.

Yongnuo Flash Guide Numbers

Yongnuo publishes guide number 33 (meters) in the instruction manuals for the YN-460, YN-462, YN-465, YN-467 and YN-468 models. At the same time, the newer ones have recycle times of only 2 seconds with alkaline AA batteries (these are measured values), and compared to the Canon and Nikon middle class, you wonder how that can be.

Yongnuo Speedlite YN460-II Features

Supplied AccessoriesThe YN-460 II, like the other models from Yongnuo's 46x flash lineup, comes in a nice looking cardboard box. This box is usually shipped in a thin bubble wrap envelope which does not offer a lot of protection. A second layer or a hard box would make for safer shipping, but luckily I haven't had any damages yet.

Yongnuo YN460-II Review: Conclusion

Only a couple of months after the introduction of the original YN460 in 2009, Yongnuo has improved their bestseller in a number of ways making it a worthy upgrade and a no-brainer for people looking for a new low-budget strobist flash, especially given the very moderate price increase. Above all, the added power is very welcome, but also the faster recycle 2.0 seconds (instead of 5 sec) with Sanyo eneloops is really quite fast.

Yongnuo YN460-II In-Depth Review

The YN460 II, the second flash from Yongnuo, is an upgraded version of the original YN460. The big difference is an increased guide number which reaches now GN 34 in the test (official GN is 38). Luckily, the price has only been moderately increased, making this a very attractive offer for off-camera flash to use with radio triggers. Other improvements include shorter recycle time, partial output levels, a more silent operation, and a better location for the optical slave sensor.

Yongnuo YN460-II Specs and Test Results

Guide Number TestingThe guide number (GN) represents the power of illumination of a light source and is used for comparing different hot shoe flashes. More light is obviously better so the higher the guide number (GN) the more possibilities and maximum range you have. Guide number must be stated together with the angle of coverage of the flash reflector (expressed as a full frame focal length) and the sensor sensitivity (or film speed). On Speedlights.

Choosing and Customizing a Picture Style

Mark Picture Style Portrait

Picture Styles have risen in popularity with so many photographers that Canon has given the 5D Mark II a dedicated Picture Style button on the back of the camera. From this menu, you select one of the six preset styles or create your own style and save it as one of three customizable Picture Style settings. Having the ability to create three distinct customized Picture Styles and recalling them quickly for different shooting situations is a huge timesaver. The 5D Mark II attaches a Picture...

Just set the camera's shooting mode to < Av> (aperture-priority AE), < Tv> (shutter-priority AE), or < M> (manual) and you can use E-TTL II E-TTL autoflash. Select this mode when you want to set the shutter speed manually. The camera will then automatically set the aperture matching the shutter speed to obtain a standard exposure. If the aperture display blinks, it means that the background exposure will be underexposed or overexposed. Adjust the shutter speed until the aperture...

This is the default option for file numbering on the XSi 450D where the camera stores the last highest image number internally to continue a...

Transferring from Your Camera

Every image you shoot is stored on your camera's media card as an individual file. The file is a document, just like one you might create on your computer. Before you can do any editing of your images using your computer, you have to copy those image documents from your camera's media card onto your computer's hard drive. There are two ways to transfer images from your camera. Either plug the camera directly into your computer, or remove its media card and place it in a media reader that is...

THE Ti And Bad Weather

While the Rebel T1i can handle light rain, it's not going to do so well in heavy rain, or submersed in water. If you accidentally submerge your camera, take it out of the water immediately and don't turn it on. Remove the battery and media card and let the camera sit for several days to dry out. To speed drying, place the camera in a bowl and cover it with dry, uncooked rice. The rice will act as a desiccant and can help speed drying. After a few days, try powering up the camera. If it works...

All New Features

The Canon EOS 40D, like its predecessors, is a mid-level digital SLR, intended as a step up from entry-level cameras like the Digital Rebels. It's suitable for more advanced photographers, especially those who can live without the most advanced features found in Canon's pro line, such as the Canon EOS-1D Mark III or Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. Even so, the 40D is upscale enough to excite any avid photographer. For example, its magnesium alloy body and weatherproofing of the battery compartment and...

Improved Cross Type Focus Points

Cross Type Focus Points Images

One improvement that new Canon EOS 40D owners sometimes overlook is the upgrade to cross-type focus points at all nine focus zone positions with lenses having that f 5.6 or larger maximum aperture , plus a center cross-type focus point that is extra sensitive when used with lenses having a maximum f stop of f 2.8 or better. Why is this important It helps to review exactly how the 40D determines focus. The camera looks for contrast between adjacent pixels to determine relative sharp-ness...

Adjusting White Balance

I showed you how to adjust white balance in Chapter 3, using the 40D's built-in presets, white balance shift capabilities, setting exact color temperatures, and white balance bracketing (there's more on bracketing in Chapter 4, too). In most cases, however, the EOS 40D will do a good job of calculating white balance for you, so Auto can be used as your choice most of the time. Use the preset values or set a custom white balance that matches the current shooting conditions when you need to. The...

The Canon EOS 40D has an amazing number of buttons and dials and knobs and that's actually a good thing. While it might take you some time to learn the position and function of each of these controls, once you've mastered them this camera is remarkably easy to use. That's because dedicated buttons with only one or two functions each are much faster to access than the alternative a maze of menus that must be navigated every time you want to use a feature. Rotate the Main dial to select the shutter speed

Stop Should You Move Shutter Speed

Refer to Figure 7-7 to locate shutter speed on the Camera Settings display. After you select the shutter speed, the camera selects an aperture (f-stop) to match. What shutter speed you need depends on the speed at which your subject is moving, so some experimentation is needed. But generally speaking, 1 500 second should be plenty for all but the fastest subjects speeding hockey players like my subject, race cars, boats, and so on. For slower subjects, you can even go as low as 1 250 or 1 125...

Shooting Your First Digital Rebel XTi Picture

Teclado Ppt

If you're like me, the first time you laid your hands on your Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, you couldn't wait to use it. I would have taken some shots on the way home from the camera store if I'd remembered to bring a Compact Flash card along with me. It's likely the battery didn't have much juice in it, but I would have tried anyway. The XTi is quite tempting right out of the box, especially if you've previously used either of its predecessors, the original Digital Rebel or the Digital Rebel...

Batch Processing with Adobe Camera Raw

Medications Used For Copd

To convert a number of RAW files efficiently with Photoshop CSi you must create your own Photoshop action. This action should open a file in ACR, apply all settings for the ACR workflow selecting output Resolution, Depth, color Space, Size, start the conversion, make the setting for the target format, and finally save the file using the appropriate preferred image mode. Important in file saving is selecting an output file format and various settings for that specific file format. The following...

Color channel clipping

We mentioned that most histograms in cameras show the histogram as grayscale levels. But as we are dealing with color images, we have, in reality, histograms of all three RGB channels. Some clipping can happen just in one or two color channels, which might not display in the luminance histogram. Here is an example from the Canon 10D demonstrating typical problems with saturated colors. Blue, orange and yellow flowers are good candidates, and it is safer not to use up the full exposure headroom...

White Balance Shift

Sometimes neither Auto White Balance nor the white balance preset is quite right for your situation. If a custom white balance is not an option perhaps you don't have a white reference available , then you can always use the Tli's White Balance Shift feature. This is a fairly advanced option that is intended for shooters who are used to balancing light using colored filters. Such a topic is beyond the scope of this book, but even without an understanding of filter use, or mireds a unit of...

This chapter discusses the menus and their contents, and the new additions are discussed in detail. Use the Main dial or the Multi-controller to move among menu tabs and then use the Quick Control dial or the Multi-controller to move among menu options. Use the Set button to confirm your choices. These menus aren't available when the camera's Mode dial is set to Full Auto mode Shooting 2, Custom Functions, and My Menu. 2.1 The all-new Quick Control screen With the exception of the Shooting...

Registering Camera User Settings

David Brayshaw Art

The Camera User Settings, denoted as C1, C2, and C3 on the Mode dial, raises the level of 40D customization one notch higher. C modes enable you to set up the camera the way you want, then register virtually all of the settings from exposure settings and shooting mode to Custom Functions and save them so you can use them by switching to the C1, C2, or C3 mode on the Mode dial. And you're not locked into the setting that you register, because you can still change the drive mode and menu...

Canon Digital Photo Professional

Dpp Images Youx Com

Although I'm usually not a huge fan of the software supplied with the camera, DPP deserves another look, considering the expense and capabilities of third-party software and the often long stretches of time between updates. Very often, there are delays after a new camera debuts before updates to your favorite programs are available to handle RAW conversion. DPP ships with the camera, and the black, gray, and white interface is clean and professional-looking. For photographers without Photoshop,...

White Balance Library

Shoot a selection of blank-card images under a variety of lighting conditions on a spare memory card. If you want to recycle one of the color temperatures you've stored, insert the card and set the custom white balance to that of one of the images in your white balance library, as described above. White balance shift allows you to dial in a white balance color bias along the blue amber yellow dimensions, and or magenta green scale. In other words, you can set your color balance so that it is a...

White Balance Shift Bracket

White Balance Bracketing

Similar to Auto Exposure Bracketing, White Balance Shift Bracket can produce from one to three color variations from a single exposure. It's an interesting feature because you don't need to shoot a bracket set, which means that if you routinely like your images a little warmer or cooler, or a little more yellow or green, you can set the screen where you wish. From the moment the feature is engaged, all of your images will exhibit the color change, regardless of which white balance mode you are...

Setting a white balance shift

Similar to white balance autobracketing, you can manually set the color bias of images to a single setting by using white balance shift. The color can be biased toward blue B , amber A , magenta M , or green G in up to nine levels measured as mireds, or densities. Each level of color-correction you set is equivalent to 5 mireds of a color-temperature conversion filter. When you set a color shift or bias, it's used for all images until you change the setting. On the 5D Mark II, color...

Using Gels To Fix An Ugly Sky

Yesterday I went out with the LA Shoot This group to help lead a group shoot event but unfortunately Mother Nature was not on our side. The sky was gray and boring and it was raining on and off. While I like nice blue skies, there was no hope of getting anything beyond dark storm clouds. My friend Chris Diset was in this same situation a few months ago and used a little white balance trick to change the color of the sky.

TTL and ETTL and EOS digital cameras

All current Canon digital cameras with hotshoes - both the D30, D60, 1D and IDs digital EOS cameras and the non-EOS PowerShot Pro 70 IS, Pro 90 IS, G1 and G2 point and shoot digital cameras - support E-TTL only. Even Canon digital cameras with internal popup flashes are E-TTL only. (though if you want to use flash with a non-EOS camera you should probably check out Kevin Bjorke's page for its limitations. Canon have also written a letter to D30 users concerning proper use of EX flash units)...

Avoiding Sync Speed Problems

Using a shutter speed faster than 1 200th second can cause problems. Triggering the electronic flash only when the shutter is completely open makes a lot of sense if you think about what's going on. To obtain shutter speeds faster than 1 200th second, the T2i exposes only part of the sensor at one time, by starting the second curtain on its journey before the first curtain has completely opened, as shown in Figure 7.9. That effectively provides a briefer exposure as the open slit between the...

Maximum Xsync speed and EOS bodies

These are cameras of the Rebel series in North America (eg Rebel G, Rebel 2000), the Kiss series in Japan (eg EOS Kiss, Kiss III), and the EOS three-digit series (eg EOS 300, 500 but not the EOS 100, 600 series or 750 850) and all EOS four-digit series (eg EOS 1000, 3000) elsewhere. Note, however, that some users report that their Rebel EOS three four-digit cameras are actually physically capable of attaining a 1 125 second X sync. That is, the shutter mechanism...

Connecting Multiple Units to Your Canon EOS Rebel Ti

Non-dedicated electronic flash units can't use the automated E-TTL II features of your Rebel T2i you'll need to calculate exposure manually, through test shots evaluated on your camera's LCD, or by using an electronic flash meter. Moreover, you don't have to connect them to the accessory shoe on top of the camera. Instead, you can use an adapter in the hot shoe to provide a PC X connector, and use a shutter speed of 1 60th second or slower. You should be aware that older electronic flash units...

Auto fill reduction

Also called automatic reduction of flash output in some Canon documentation. Canon EOS cameras automatically use regular flash exposure with no compensation when ambient light levels are low - 10 EV or lower. However, when ambient light levels are brighter - 13 EV or higher - the camera will switch to fill flash mode and reduce the flash unit's output level. It does so in TTL mode by dropping flash output by 1.5 stops. Between 10 and 13 EV the camera will smoothly lower the flash unit's output...

TTL through the lens flash metering

As noted above, the earliest electronic flashes required the photographer to perform distance calculations by hand. Later, the first generation of automatic electronic flash units relied upon external sensors to determine the flash exposure setting. These sensors, mounted on the front of the flash unit, simply recorded the flash bulb's light, reflected back from subject, and cut off the power when enough light for a satisfactory exposure was determined. The venerable Vivitar 283 still sold...

ATTL advanced TTL

Canon's first step in altering flash exposure design was the creation of A-TTL, or advanced through the lens flash metering, which was introduced with the T90 camera and continued on to the EOS series of film cameras. A-TTL flash units 300TL and EZ series Speedlites only send out a brief burst of light during the metering phase. ie when the shutter release button is pressed halfway This preflash is recorded by an external sensor on the front of the flash and used to determine a reasonable...

Flash exposure compensation FEC

There are times when you may want to adjust the total flash output from a flash unit above or below what the assumed mid-tones that the camera thinks you probably want. For example, a scene that's mainly white or mainly dark will fool automated sensors, so you may want to override the flash unit. This is flash exposure compensation referred to as fill-in ratio control or flash level control in older Canon material. As noted in the section on fill flash, a common application for flash is...

ETTL evaluative TTL

With the Canon Elan II 50 camera in 1995, Canon introduced another form of flash technology - E-TTL, for evaluative through the lens flash metering. E-TTL fires a low-power preflash of known brightness from the main bulb to determine correct flash exposure. It measures the reflectance of the scene with the preflash, then calculates proper flash output to achieve a midtoned subject, based on that data. It uses a preflash, but doesn't suffer from A-TTL's drawbacks for two reasons. First, the...

Using the Builtin Flash

E-TTL II autoflash obtains high-precision and consistent flash shots. Using the Built-in Flash in the Basic Zone If necessary, the built-in flash will pop-up automatically in low-light or backlit conditions, (except in < 3ik> < E3> modes) Using the Built-in Flash in the Creative Zone Regardless of the light level, you can press the button to pop-up and fire the built-in flash whenever desired. Mil White Balance Auto Bracketing

With just one shot, three images having a different color tone can be recorded simultaneously. Based on the white balance mode's standard color temperature, the image will be bracketed with a blue amber bias or magenta green bias. This is called white balance bracketing. It can be set up to 3 levels in single-level increments. 1'ffi SHIFT BUT 0.0 0 Custom WB Set the image-recording quality to any setting except RAW and RAW+JPEG (p.52) Turn the < G> dial to select WB SHIFT BKT , then press...

MeiKe Speedlite MK-930 Review Manual Flash

Chinese photo accessories manufacturer MeiKe have recently released their version of a manual flash, the Meike 930. It's intended to compete with the Yongnuo YN560 and therefore looks similar from the specs, e.g. regarding the official guide number (which is 58 at the 105mm reflector setting unspecified for 35mm) and it also features professional attributes such as a PC sync port and a power pack connector.

Yongnuo YN-565 Discovered

There seems to be an ETTL version of the YN560 ready to be released soon the new YN-565 flash for Canon Ever since the introduction of the YN-560 as a manual-mode-only version of the 580EX series from Canon we've been waiting for a flash from Yongnuo that combines the casing of the YN560 with the digital TTL capabilities of And here it is now, as reported on photography-on-the-net and Chinese website strobe light diary (follow this link, but a login is required in order to see the photos).

Yongnuo YN460 for Strobist Use

OverviewFor strobists on a budget, Yongnuo's 460 model is a great choice. It offers everything that you need for manual operation in a package of acceptable (some say very good') quality at a bargain price, and it's available new from eBay for around 40 USD. In addition, it's rather small size, almost exactly the same as the SB-600 from Nikon. Manual power goes down to 1 64, too. Triggering is no problem via the single pin on the flash foot. And there is no trouble with standby.

But it's a useless number without additional specs flash reflector coverage angle ISO sensor sensitivity (or film speed) unit of distance meters feet Yongnuo don't talk about these details. They don't state a reflector setting for their 460 series models.

Yongnuo YN-468 Strobist Review

After the discovery and preview, I've had now a YN-468 here for a couple of days to work with and test. So this post is finally the real strobist review article. The Yongnuo YN-468 is the latest addition to the Yongnuo flash line and their 6th model overall. It is a strobist flash with a manual mode down to 1 128 (a first for Yongnuo) and the 2 proven optical slave modes from its precursors, but it is also an E-TTL flash that works in the Canon system.

Yongnuo YN-560 vs Canon 580EX II

With the 56x line Yongnuo has just announced a new line of flash units, positioned above the existing 46x line. It is rumored that the 46x flash units will remain in production, and I hope and believe this holds true. The first model in the series is the YN-560 (see here for a first review), which has been reported to be available soon, in early June 2010. As its design resembles the Canon 580EX II a lot, I have put together here the 2 units specifications next to each other.

Yongnuo YN467 YN-467

OverviewThe YN467 model is Yongnuo's 2nd TTL model after the YN465. Compared to the precursor, it was improved in 3 ways (1) is features a zoom reflector from 24 to 85mm (2) the YN-467 re-introduces the 2 optical slave modes known from the YN460 and YN460-II and (3) Yongnuo claims a vastly improved recycle time stating it at 1 second at full power which means it would be the fastest recycling compact flash in the world.

Yongnuo YN-465 Flash Review

If you're looking for a digital flash for under 100 your options are pretty limited there is certainly nothing you could buy new from Canon or Nikon for that budget. But how about a TTL flash for under 75 With an M mode for strobist photography on top That's what you get with the Yongnuo YN-465 The YN465, the first TTL model from the Chinese photo product company is basically a TTL-enabled YN460. It is available in a Canon E-TTL version or as a Nikon i-TTL model.

EVOLT E-500 Black and White Portrait

When we shoot in color, we do not depart from what we see everyday, so our eye expects certain details in order to fill out the image. Black and white photography gives us the opportunity to diverge from this norm and, in a way, view reality as an abstraction. For certain situations, it is advantageous to use the black and white setting on your digital camera, as it is the only way to see without color observing only the highlights and shadows.

Choosing a Color Space sRGB vs Adobe RGB

Adobe Rgb Srgb

Normally, your camera captures images using the sRGB color mode, which simply refers to an industry-standard spectrum of colors. The s is for standard, and the RGB is for red-green-blue, which are the primary colors in the digital imaging color world. This color mode was created to help ensure color consistency as an image moves from camera or scanner to monitor and printer the idea was to create a spectrum of colors that all of these devices can reproduce. However, the sRGB color spectrum...
